The Sunbum team, from management through both teams (roofing and solar) are exactly what is expected of professionals! From the moment I called for an estimate until the solar started producing!! We can't be any happier! Showed up as scheduled, did a beautiful, beautiful job! No messing around! No time wasted! Cleaned up all of the surrounding areas very well!! Git 'er dun!!! A top 5 Star rating all the way. Thank you Kevin and your teams!! Update (14 July 2026): The roof is still beautiful! The solar install ... well???? After the solar install was completed, during the system check, the installer told me that he believed 2 of the 24 panels were not producing. He affirmed me that once Sunbum Solar and Roofing got solar monitoring permission from me via forms and an app that they use to monitor the system that they (Sunbum) would very and certify the entire solar system. After a week of waiting, I call them (June 8th) to ask what was going on. The solar guy said that he had to "find" the forms and that once he found them he would send to me. Hasn't happened yet. I sent the Sunbum boss and text on July 8th requesting a Paid in Full Invoice (promised at job completion) and to ask about the monitoring service forms. I have yet to receive a call or a text from either the Sunbum boss or the solar guy!!!! I have no idea if all of my solar panels are producing or not!! Bottom line, as of right now, Sunbum is great up front and during install but it seams once they receive final payment and it clears the bank they ignore you!! So my follow-on rating is a ZERO STAR!! Only because they fail to follow through to their word!!!!!!!

I had tried purchasing a PV and battery system for my new residence from a different company starting early mid 2025. They designed it for __the wrong house__ and charged me $1,000, then went bankrupt near the end of the year. I searched for another firm with good reviews and found Sunbum Solar for my new house. In about 2 1/2 weeks they were able to design from plans and plat map, an 18+ kw system with 27kwh battery system, get all proper permits and installed in 2025 and my PTO. I definitely recommend Sunbum Solar, everything is professional looking and they are pleasure to deal with. If I need to expand my system I will definitely go with them.

Competitive pricing and hard-working people busting their butts to get us installed before the end of 2025. We decided in August of 2025 to try to join the mad rush to get solar installed before the end of the year to get the expiring 30% tax credit. Complicating things was that we wanted to replace an 18-year-old roof before getting solar. After shopping around, we found most only two vendors who could do both - roof and solar. We also looked at several roof-only and solar-only bids. SunBum's bids for both were extremely competitive, with the main risk being that they are not a huge, multi-state company and everyone is fighting for solar equipment at the end of the year. I usually DON'T go with the strictly lowest bidder, but in this case, we took that chance with SunBum, which had the most competitive bid by far. The roof went up in September with new architectural shingles. Then came the long permitting processing, the acquisition of the solar equipment (and in our case Tesla battery), and then trying to schedule installation, inspection, commissioning, then Permission to Operate from Dominion with the net metering agreement. I will say there were some challenges along the way from weather delays to a factory fire for one of the solar panel providers, to just the mad end-of-year rush that put everyone's nerves and patience to the test. Our 17 panel + Tesla Powerwall 3 install was by no means a piece of cake. A missing part from Tesla complicated the issue. But in the end, everyone kept a level head - despite frigid and wet weather - and Kevin and crews got us up and running before the holidays. The attached photo of our app shows that even on an almost 100% cloudy day, we were generating electricity which was charging our car, our battery, and our house. I am glad we got such a good deal with SunBum, but if I had one piece of advice for anyone considering solar - the basic solar panels + inverter are a really good idea - even WITHOUT the 30% credit. You will save on energy, and most systems last beyond their 25–30-year warranties. The battery (Tesla or otherwise) is a bit of vanity item that only makes sense if you REALLY want whole or partial power backup to run your fridge, AC, etc. for hours while your power is out. The economics don't make as much sense in the short term, but it does increase the value of your home. It's too bad the Federal government is taking 2 steps backwards in its support for solar - the rest of the world is moving ahead - but I would still consider this for your home, and the economics make much more sense when you can get pricing like we got from SunBum. So, we are some very tired but happy campers and look forward to our close to zero electric bills in the hot summer :-)

I had a great experience with Sun Bum Solar and Roofing . All of my questions during the first meeting to discuss my solar needs were answered, and all of my questions after the initial meeting were addressed quickly. I didn't feel pressured to make an immediate decision, sign anything, or commit to anything right away as I've experienced with other solar system company representatives. Kevin even made recommendations on system accessories to not purchase right away to help make this project more affordable for me. Communication as to what to expect before, during, and after the installation process was frequent and simple to understand. The installation team arrived on time, and they worked seamlessly to finish the job within a day. I am looking forward to seeing what the new system can do over the next year, and want to work with Sun Bum again when I'm ready to add more panels and a battery system. My wife and I inherited a home that required extensive renovations. After several months of gutting it, making it our own, and moving in, we were finally down to one last big project: replacing the roof. We had considered going solar at the same time, but with so much conflicting information online, it was hard to know which direction to take. I interviewed several companies, and ultimately, my wife and I chose SunBum for both the roof replacement and solar panel installation. We went with SunBum for several key reasons: The owner, Kevin, was punctual, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. He took the time to sit down with me, answer all of my questions, and fill in some gaps in my understanding of solar. They used their own employees for both roofing and solar work. This was a big deal for us. I had read too many horror stories about solar companies subcontracting the roofing work, only for the subcontractors to go out of business—making warranty issues a nightmare. SunBum is a local Virginia Beach business that’s been around for over a decade. That gave me confidence I wasn’t dealing with a fly-by-night operation that might disappear after the install. Kevin never once tried to upsell us. When I asked if a battery system made sense for us, he looked at our use case and simply said, “No.” That kind of honesty was refreshing, especially after dealing with a few pushy companies that wouldn’t leave us alone. Their pricing was very competitive. I won’t get into specifics because every project is different, but I can say we felt we got excellent value for the quality of work and service provided. The roof installation came first. The crew arrived exactly when scheduled and completed the job—including ridge vents—in just one day. They were respectful of our property and our neighbors’, and they did a great job cleaning up afterward. About a week later, the solar panels were installed in much the same fashion. Kevin’s master electrician arrived first and walked me through what to expect. The installation crew was professional, courteous, and took the time to explain how to operate the system and what the next steps would be. Our situation was a bit unique. Most solar companies ask for a year’s worth of electric bills to estimate usage, but our home had been vacant during renovations, and prior to that, only my mother-in-law lived there—so energy usage was minimal. With three people now living here and extensive electrical upgrades in place, our consumption would be very different. Kevin estimated our system would cover 101% of our annual energy needs. So far, he’s been right on the mark. In just four days since going live, we've already netted about 65 kWh back to the grid and that's with our HVAC system running the AC on average 6-8 hours a day. If you're on the fence about going solar, now is the time to act. Dominion’s current net metering incentives are likely to change within the next year. If you move now, you can still be grandfathered into the existing program. If you decide to go solar, I strongly recommend giving Kevin at SunBum a call. Support a trusted local Virginia Beach business—you won’t regret it.
